High Housing Costs Drive Nearly 40% of Ontarians to Consider Leaving Province

Nearly four in ten Ontarians are considering leaving the province due to high housing costs. Conducted online with 4,204 Canadians, the survey revealed that 28% of all respondents were contemplating moving out of their current province due to housing affordability concerns. Ontario had the highest percentage of potential movers at 39%, followed by British Columbia at 36% and Nova Scotia at 25%. Among those seriously considering leaving Ontario, popular destinations included moving abroad (26%), Alberta (17%), the United States (17%), and Atlantic Canada (14%).
The survey highlighted a significant generational and immigrant divide in housing-related migration considerations. Young Ontarians aged 18 to 34 were almost twice as likely (46%) to consider moving compared to those aged 55 and older (26%). Recent immigrants were also more inclined to leave, with 39% of those in Canada for 10 years or less contemplating a move due to housing costs, compared to 28% of the general population and 30% of those in Canada for 11 years or more.
Despite the high cost of housing, there is still some optimism among Ontarians. About 58% of Ontario residents surveyed expressed hope that housing affordability will improve over the next few years, compared to 53% of Canadians overall. The survey, conducted between June 14 and June 20, has a margin of error of 1.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
